The Virgin River is the primary drainage in the Zion National Park area. All waterways in Washington County drain into the Virgin which eventually drains into the Colorado River near Lake Mead. The Virgin River is steep and narrow, almost all sections can be run by kayak or raft. Boating on the Virgin is seasonal and is limited to spring runoff and floods. Currently there are no guide services that offer rafting trips on the Virgin River. Kayaking and Rafting are allowed in Zion National Park, permits are required. To get a permit for the Zion Narrows the peak water levels need to be under 600 CFS, several rescues in 2009 led to the ZNPS establishing restrictive management procedures.
